Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) commenced an investigation into corruption within dealings to procure Monicon tags during the tenure of former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, ACC is currently collecting statements from individuals who know details of the contract to acquire the monitoring equipment.

The corruption watchdog is yet to release an official statement concerning the matter.

An unknown company was contracted to procure the tags in 2015. At the time there were rumours that Umar Naseer exerted personal influence to close the deal.

Several criminals were tagged during the previous administration and kept under observation as per a system established by the police.

Umar served as Home Minister during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and resigned from his position in 2016.
