Police begin releasing traffic operation statistics

The traffic operation, launched last Monday, came in response to a rise in traffic violations, including increasing cases of reckless driving. Accidents have been on the rise, with two youths killed in crashes last week.

Police have begun releasing statistics from traffic operations initiated under the orders of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, following a fatal accident last week in which a sports car collided with a motorcycle in Hulhumale'.

In response to the incident, President Muizzu announced stringent measures, including the revocation of permits previously issued by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for racing and drifting in Hulhumale'. Additional traffic measures have since been put in place.

Statistics released today detail road safety operations conducted in Male' and Hulhumale' on September 8 and 9. During those days, 22 motorcycles and 10 cars were stopped and searched, resulting in three cars and 19 motorcycles towed. Police reported that two cars and 15 motorcycles were stopped for driving without a license, while several vehicles were flagged for reckless driving.

Between September 9 and 10, 30 cars and 229 motorcycles were stopped and searched, with action taken against drivers of two cars and 53 motorcycles. Police also addressed eight cases of driving without a license and five instances of reckless driving. Three cars and 14 motorcycles were towed in Hulhumale'.

Statistics shared on the official Police website indicate that so far this year, 1900 accidents have been recorded. This is a marked increase from figures last year, which show 1476 accidents in the same period. In last year's accidents, 125 persons were injured, and 5 died due to injuries.
