Fifteen Maldivian students who were stuck in Western Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk have been repatriated back to home country.
The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Maldivian Embassy at Berlin, Germany jointly worked to provide safe passage for the students to reach Hungary.
The students arrived in Hungary on Friday, last week.
According to the Communications Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Miuvan Mohamed, all 15 students who reached Budapest on Friday, have arrived in the Maldives sometime during the early hours of Monday, 28th February.
At the time when war broke out in Ukraine following the Russian military invasion, it was reported that close to 50 Maldivian students were residing in the country reading for their medical degrees.
While several of these students managed to fly out of Ukraine before the conflict transitioned into war, the students who failed to do so found themselves stuck between a geopolitical conflict they had no relation with.
Meanwhile, the Maldives government threw an olive branch to the stranded local students by means of financial assistance until they are repatriated safely back home.
According to the Ministry of Higher Education, the Maldives government extended financial assistance to a total of 21 local students who were stranded in the country.
In addition to this, the BML card limits for the students have since been extended as well.
