UK marine research foundation 'Nekton' will be collaborating with Maldives government for a large-scale marine expedition.

The research's main focus is to assess impact to Maldivian oceans, underwater biodiversity and other natural aspects owing to climate change. A joint press release by President's Office and Nekton affirmed findings from the marine expedition will be shared with scientists and policy makers affiliated in environment sector.

The marine research mission, scheduled for September 4, will last for a period of 35 days. The team will include industry professionals from the Maldives along with international scientists, researchers and marine biologists.

Nekton's marine expedition will launch off from the surface of the ocean up to 1,000 meters. "This is the first such expedition where we will be diving this far in the Maldives," the statement read.

The team consists of 10 marine scientists from the Maldives as focal points. The mission will utilize 'submersible' underwater vessels capable of deep-sea diving.

The main team consists of 40 professionals, 16 locals and 24 international researchers and scientists.

The mission will use the latest, state-of-art deep-sea diving technology including robotic systems for underwater survey.

The research mission aims to gather information on;

- Baseline health check of the Maldivian ocean

- Assessment of reefs and collect data from previously uncollected ocean zones with the inclusion of ecosystems specific to said zones

- Assessment of areas that require preservation and protection

- Surveying reefs and areas where fish schools develop

- Gathering information that is relevant to bolster state's pledge of protecting 20 percent of the Maldivian ocean area

Moreover, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih speaking about the marine research mission, said the initiative will benefit in identifying sustainable methods for the Maldivian economy. Additionally, the Maldives head of state claims the research mission will provide relevant data to understand areas that require preservation, which in turn will enhance resuscitating damaged zones.
