Seven accused of assault on former PG Shameem sent for prosecution

The prosecution filed a case against Midhhath Adam, Mohamed Jazlan, Zayan Naseer, Abdul Hannaan, Rajuwaan Latheef and Ahmed Maisaan Hashim.

The Prosecutor General's Office has charged seven people in connection with the attack on former Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem.

PG Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque in late January while returning from dropping his child off at school.

Two individuals on a motorcycle, wearing helmets to conceal their identities, are believed to have attempted to strike Shameem on the head with a hammer. However, Shameem was able to defend himself, resulting in injuries to his left forearm instead.

The prosecution filed a case against Midhhath Adam, 23, Raa atoll Alifushi, Mohamed Jazlan, 22, Thundi, Laamu atoll Gan, Zayan Naseer, Alif Dhaalu atoll Maamigili, Abdul Hannaan, Thaa atoll Thiyamigili, Rajuwaan Latheef, Laamu atoll Maamemdhoo and Ahmed Maisaan Hashim, Male'.

Midhhath Adam has been charged with assaulting Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem. Mohamed Jazlan faces charges for transporting Midhhath on a motorbike during the attack. Additionally, Maisaan is charged with providing the motorbike used by the attackers.

The remaining four individuals have been charged with planning the attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem. They are also accused of remaining in the area while parked and leaving only after the assault was carried out.

All seven individuals have been charged with attempted murder using a dangerous weapon. They are currently remanded in custody pending trial.
