The government has announced that it will disclose the findings of the Commission on Deaths and Disappearances (DDCom) reports once they are handed over to the President's Office.
Established in 2018 by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, DDCom was tasked with probing unresolved murders, enforced disappearances, and abductions that occurred between January 1, 2012, and November 17, 2018.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended the term of the commission until the end of May at the request of the victims' families. Investigations, including the murder cases of human rights defender and blogger Yameen Rasheed and parliamentarian and moderate religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali, are still underway.
Five local and five international bodies have also called for DDCom's findings to be made public.
When asked by Mihaaru News, Chief Spokesperson at the President's Office Heena Waleed, said that the government would disclose the information in the DDCom reports once they are received.
DDCom has also stated that it will wrap up its work by the end of this month and submit its reports to the President's Office, as it is accountable to the President. Following this, the commission will be dissolved.
After DDCom was established, the Solih administration had stated that its investigations would be completed within two years. However, even six months after the end of the previous government, complete justice has not been brought to any of the cases investigated.
Between 2018 and 2021, the expenditure of DDCom was close to MVR 5.5 million (approximately USD 357,000).
