The Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) has raised MVR 2.9 million in donations to help the victims of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

A total of MVR 2,990,618.91 has been raised for the relief fund opened from February 7 to 14 this month, MRC said in a press conference.

The MRC opened the fund after the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) issued an appeal for USD 200 million in emergency aid to help the earthquake victims.

The association said that they received funds through bank transfers and the fund box set up in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi, the central hub of the northern Maldives. The fund box had collected a total of MVR 22,219.56.

The donations received through the fund have been handed over to the IFRC and will be rendered to those who help those in need through a transparent system, the MRC said.

The death toll from the powerful earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border has now risen to over 44,000. The death toll is still likely to rise as parts of buildings are removed and cleared, as a large number of people have been reported to be under the collapsed buildings.
