The Maldivian government on Friday announced its decision to donate one million cans of tuna to Türkiye and Syria to assist in relief efforts.
The Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Miuvaan Mohamed, revealed that the Maldivian government would be donating 500,000 tuna cans to each country "as a symbolic gesture from the Maldivian people towards the relief efforts."
He also said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had sent condolence messages to the leaders of both countries.
Last week, the Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) opened a relief fund to help victims of the earthquake in response to the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) appeal to raise funds for emergency response.
The devastating earthquake that hit these countries on February 6 has already claimed the lives of nearly 23,000 people in the affected areas. Search-and-rescue efforts are under way to find people trapped under the rubble.
