Police closes 34 "drug cafe's"

Police has so far closed 34 establishments that operates as "drug cafés," providing drugs and narcotics to their customers.

In the operation started by the Police last week, 20 such establishments were closed. Fourteen additional places had been closed in previous targeted operations held in 2020 and earlier this year as well.

Police have been patrolling such establishments after shutting them down.

They said two drug cafés have not yet been shut down. Police have identified 47 locations that operate drug cafés in the Male' area.

In their efforts to stop such activities, owners of 25 households where these cafés are operated have been issued legal warnings last week. As several owners support such activities, police have sent several of their cases for Prosecutor General's office as well.

For the first time ever, charges were pressed against Hussain Yoosuf, an owner of a house where such establishments are operated earlier this month.
