National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) on Friday announced lifting of monitoring status of local island Himmafushi in Kaafu Atoll.
The island was placed under monitoring on May 15, after three locals tested positive for COVID-19. They all were transferred to the island’s drug rehabilitation facility from Malé’ on May 13.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), one of the rehab patients had come into contact with a Bangladeshi expatriate worker in Malé who had tested positive for the virus.
The three individuals were identified during random testing conducted by authorities at rehab center.
Maldives currently records 1,274 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,166 active cases. The country has reported four fatalities and a total of 104 recoveries till date.
The capital city of Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since confirming its first local transmission of the virus on April 15.
WHO has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 5.25 million people and claimed over 336,817 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, 2.1 million people have recovered.
