The Foreign Ministry of Israel has issued a warning to its citizens discouraging travel to the Maldives, citing Maldives' vocal support for Palestine.
"The atmosphere in the Maldives against Israel is intensifying and therefore Israeli citizens are advised to avoid traveling to the Maldives at this time," the statement reported in Israeli news website 'Arutz Sheva' reads.
A frequent surf tourist to Maldives has yesterday accused Maldives of 'funding terrorist organizations like Hamas'. He said that in response to news of Maldives' donating funds to aid Palestine and the declaration that Maldives stands with Palestine.
Maldivians are conducting various activities in aid of Palestine. A large amount of donations have been raised through hosting a telethon, food stalls and other events in both capital Male' and the atolls.
Leading the efforts to send donations from Maldives to Palestine is the International Aid Campaign (IAC). According to IAC, the Maldives has donated MVR 15 million to Palestine to date.
IAC has assured the public that it is tirelessly working to ensure the donations reach Palestinians through various means.
"Israel is committing war crimes against Palestinians, in complete contravention of international law," the Maldives has also stated at Wednesday's Organization for Islamic Cooperation (IOC) meeting.
