A new species of damselfish has been discovered in deep sea coral reefs of Maldives.

Marine Research Institute said that the species, scientifically named "Chromis abadhah", has been recorded in eight locations spanning a 180-kilometer area from Lhaviyani atoll to Dhaalu atoll.

The institute said that the species is likely present in other parts of the country as well.

The fish was found at depths ranging from 95 to 110 meters and grows up to 6.9 cm. Researchers analyzed four specimens, which were caught using nets.

"The analysis shows that the fish has never been recorded before in any other part of the world," Marine Research Institute stated.
