Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has begun efforts to acquire signatures to hold an extraordinary sitting outside of the parliamentary session to give consent for the cabinet ministers.

The Government Oversight Committee on Saturday, December 30, passed the decision to give consent to the current administration's cabinet.

The parliament majority party confirmed to Mihaaru News that it was now attempting to acquire the necessary signatures to hold an extraordinary sitting.

Pictures of the members signing on the petition has already been shared on social media platforms as well.

According to the parliamentary regulation, an extraordinary sitting can be scheduled with the signatures of one-third of the parliament's members.

Some members have already said they have acquired the legally required number of signatures.

The meeting must be scheduled within 14 days from the date of the petition's submission to the parliament, according to the regulation.

While concluding the third session of the parliament's 2023 term, Speaker Mohamed Aslam agreed to arrange for an extraordinary meeting at the earliest convenience if the members request it following the completion of the committee-stage assessment on the consent issue.

Although the committee approved the decision to give consent to the cabinet, MDP members in the Government Oversight Committee voted neutral. The decision was approved with the votes of members from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), People's National Congress (PNC), Maldives National Party (MNP), and The Democrats.
