Maldives Police Service has launched a probe over the statement of Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail claiming that he distributed bribery money among parliamentarians.

A spokesperson of Police confirmed that the case filed by an individual against lawmaker Mohamed Ismail is now currently under investigation and, hence, did not reveal any further details of the case.

Speaking in the parliament chamber on a previous occassion, MP Mohamed Ismail admitted to bribing lawmakers with the money embezzled from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) by jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb, which is the largest case of corruption in the nation's history. In a heated debate over the embezzlement scandal, MP Mohamed Ismail had stood up and confessed that he was the one who went to distribute the bribery money, describung it as "carrying a sack of money" from lawmaker to lawmaker. He had later reiterated the same confession on some local television shows.

The case filed by an individual requested to check where the money came from and to find for which purpose the money was distributed. The case filed at the police also urged to take action if any criminal offences were involved.

Meanwhile, responding to the heavy criticisms of the opposition, MP Mohamed said that he gave those statements only for political means and that he has provided all the details to the Anti-Corruption Commission already.

The case of lawmaker Mohamed Ismail has arisen at a time when opposition leader of Jumhoory Party (JP) and lawmaker of Maamigili Constituency Qasim Ibrahim, and Deputy Leader of JP Abdulla Riyaz have been charged with bribery of parliamentarians.
