Criminal Court judge Hassan Saeed has retired after 21 years of service in the Maldives judiciary.

Saeed has also served as a former judge of the Maldives Family Court.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) acknowledged Saeed’s contributions to the judiciary and thanked him for his services.

Though the commission expressed its gratitude to the retiring judge, JSC had recently probed a case that involved him.

Saeed was alleged to have allowed employees of the Family Court to fly abroad to officiate a marriage in 2018 when he was the Chief Judge of the court, leading to a 14-day suspension.

However, The Judges Appeal Committee on April 20, unanimously found Saeed’s suspension was unlawful and did not find any disciplinary misconduct.

JSC had previously investigated the judge on several other cases, and Saeed's transfer to Criminal Court in 2016 was also related to a case the commission was then probing.

Retired judges will receive a monthly allowance based on their remuneration and duration of service, and their spouses and children below 18 years of age will receive health insurance.
