Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has signed an agreement to supply body-worn camera to be used by frontline prison officers in the prisons.

MCS said that the cameras, meant to be worn on the body of the officers, are to be used on a trial basis. An agreement was signed with Zeta Technologies, to import the body cameras developed by US company Exxon.

The agreement between MCS and Zeta Technology was signed for a period of three months. The agreement was signed by Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamedfulhu signed on behalf of MCS, and Managing Director of Zeta Technology Mohamed Aiman Adam.

Zeta Technology is to provide MCS with 15 body cameras and three tasers within the duration of the agreement. MCS said they will conduct training sessions to ensure their officers are knowledgeable on when and how to use the tasers.

MCS said body cameras will lead to increased accountability amongst prison officers. They will play an important role in ensuring the safety and protection of prisoners as well as the prison officers.

Maldives Police Services have also started using body cameras on February 13.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Iskandhar Koshi, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said body cameras will be an important tool to bring about a major change in the work of the police, increase public confidence and hold the police accountable.
