Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced in the early hours of Sunday that the two guests and five staff members at Summer Island Resort, who exhibited suspected symptoms of COVID-19, all tested negative for the virus.

HPA officials arrived at the resort on Saturday to test the tourists and staff. Summer Island revealed that the two guests, along with two staff members, were transferred to the quarantine centre at Farukolhufushi.

Following the announcement of test results, HPA has also lifted the temporary quarantine placed on Summer Island.

In a press release, the resort assured that it will continue to rigorously monitor any suspected symptoms of COVID-19 and take swift action accordingly.

The government also placed Kuredu Resort and Spa on lockdown Saturday, after an Italian guest who holidayed on the island later tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy. Later the same day, the Ministry of Health confirmed that two foreign staff members at Kuredu tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first cases of the novel coronavirus in Maldives.

Kuredu's resident doctor and a management staff are now isolated at Farukolhufushi. The government assured that both are in stable condition and that efforts are underway to conduct contact tracings to identify and test individuals at risk of exposure to the virus.

Authorities urged the public not to panic and refrain from enabling the spread of misinformation. Doctors have also called on the people to observe good hygiene and best practices in the prevention and management of viral infections, and to seek medical attention at any sign of flu.
