President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed on Tuesday attended the official enthronement ceremony of Japan's new Emperor Naruhito.
He ascended the Chrysanthemum throne earlier their year, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito.
In addition to President Solih, multitudes of state heads and officials including Prince Charles, the heir apparent to the British throne, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon.
All in all, heads of state and other dignitaries from over 170 countries were present to witness the beginning of the new Emperor's rule.
A change in the monarch of the imperial throne of Japan is a rare and special occasion, with the previous Emperor having been crowned on 7th January 1989.
State head from Maldives, then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was present for this ceremony as well.
The first couple, along with a delegation are currently on an official trip to Japan on the invitation of the Japanese government. This visit is aimed to bolster bilateral relations between both countries.
