Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) on Sunday, September 24 announced eligibility criterium to receive land plots from Uthuru Thila Falhu.

Maldives government announced the second phase of Binveriya scheme specific for locals residing in Malé City for 20 years and more or residents on Malé registry for the same duration.

The State Minister of MNPHI and Chairman of the Flat and Land Plot Committee, Akram Kamaluddin, said that individuals who wish to apply for the scheme must relinquish their ownership of any social housing properties they have received in previous schemes.

He added that recipients of Hiyaa housing flat can apply for the second phase of Binveriya once they relinquish ownership of the flats.

"We made these arrangements after factoring in the complaints received in the first phase. Interested parties will receive the chance to apply once they cede ownership of Hiyaa flats or any other social housing flats they received previously," Akram said.

He further said that the over 600 applicants aged between 18 to 25 who were eliminated in the first phase of the scheme would have the chance to apply under the second phase.

Akram said the government aims to issue 5,098 plots of 1,250 square feet each under the second phase.

The government on Saturday evening, September 23 announced a new housing scheme of 8,000 flats and over 5,000 plots from Hulhumalé.

The location for the second round of Binveriya is a contentious zone, which the opposition alleges has been awarded to develop a military base.

While the coastguard uses Uthuru Thila Falhu of the Maldives as a vessel repair hub, a total of 15 hectares of land have been reclaimed in the region so far with the entire project slated to conclude in January 2025.

With the second phase of the scheme already announced, several recipients of the first phase have already been awarded with their designated plots.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday evening pledged to connect Malé City with Uthuru Thila Falhu via bridge.
