Male' City Council approved vehicle restriction hours for the upcoming Fitr Eid holiday.

According to the authority, all land vehicles operating in Male' City will be restricted from transportation for four hours on the date from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The request for "pedestrian-only" hours was made by North-Maafannu member of the council Aminath Yumna, who had requested to restrict vehicle transportation in both Male' and Hulhumale'.

However, dissent broke when the request for vehicle restriction extended to Hulhumale' as well. Many of the council members pointed out that the restriction will lead to difficulties for its residents, especially those living in Hulhumale'-Phase II.

Some members of the council noted a complete transportation restriction in Phase II would pose several hindrances for the residents living in the area; most likely logistical issues due to comparative lack of necessary resources there.

Despite polarizing views over vehicle restrictions in Hulhumale', the majority of members agreed for such a restriction in the Maldives capital.

The members noted the degree of congestion in Male' has lead to restrictive pedestrian movement in the city.

They argued that vehicle restrictions in the city will enhance for families to step out into public places on a sacred holiday without facing difficulties.

The council has approved restrictions between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm of Fitr Eid holiday. Fitr Eid falls on May 2, according to the calendar.

The city's Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muiz confirmed that the council authority will communicate with Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation for necessary formalities and permission.
