Taxi centers warn on completely shutting down operations if the state fails to comply with their demands--

The taxi centers operating in the Greater Male' Region have collectively warned on the possibility of a complete cessation of taxi operations.

According to the centers, they will discontinue taxi services if the government of Maldives refrained from complying with their demands.

Earlier, a joint statement requesting for a fare price hike was lodged at the Ministry of Transport by the centers operating in the Greater Male' area.

The statement had demanded complying with a price hike request. The centers further warned that they will bump the prices up on fares if the government did not respond to their demands, giving a time frame of five days to respond - from the date of the letter.

Meanwhile, the ministry had earlier warned on taking necessary action against taxi centers and drivers if they increase fare prices themselves.

On the other hand, Maldives Police Service stated that they will take action against taxi centers and drivers if found operating with higher-than-approved fare prices.

The situation has become critical with centers collectively deciding to completely shut down their operations. A driver of the cab covenant who spoke with Mihaaru News said that the centers have coincided to shut down operations after Thursday, 10th March 2022.

Reportedly, the centers had requested from the Minister of Transport Ms. Aishath Nahula to give a definitive response regarding installing taxi meters in cabs.
