The Civil Service Commission (CSC), on Thursday, suspended Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation's Permanent Secretary Abdulla Fayaz for a period of one month over complaints lodged against him.

CSC noted that Fayaz would receive his salary for the month.

Fayaz previously served during the former administration of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as the Deputy Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.

Although the exact nature of the complaints was undisclosed, local media Mihaaru reported that the investigation concerns the regulation pertaining to shipping agency operations in Maldives.

Similarly, a case was submitted to the Anti Corruption Commission over the regulation's sudden annulment less than a month after it came into effect.

The case forwarded to the ACC asserted that the regulation was nullified on September 16 without the input of the Transport Authority Board, in violation of the Transport Act.

The case also raised allegations that Transport Minister Aishath Nahula had misused her authority to nullify the regulation in order to secure illicit benefits for particular entities. Accordingly, the businessmen requested the corruption watchdog to launch an investigation and take any necessary measures.

The transport ministry has denied wrongdoing.
