Maldives Police Service revealed Sunday that the Transport Authority has suspended the licenses of three drivers recently involved in major accidents on the Sinamale Bridge and connecting highway.
The authority issued long term suspensions on the three negligent drivers, on the request of the police.
The first accident took place on June 4, when a car crashed into the dividers along the highway. The authority seized the driver's license for a period of one year, and penalised a witness who did not report the accident.
The second took place on June 7, when a car plowed into the wall of the Marine Research Centre, which is situated off the entrance of the Sinamale Bridge in capital Male'. The driver's license has been suspended for a period of one year and six months.
The third accident took place on June 8, when a car crashed into the dividers again. The driver's license is suspended for a year.
The dividers along the highway has been damaged or destroyed in five accidents to date. The latest accident took place late Saturday, where a section was again destroyed.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC)'s Managing Director Suhail Ahmed revealed Sunday that concrete dividers will be placed along the highway in the future, to minimise damage.
