Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), on Saturday, revealed that the seven percent increase in handling fees and wharfage would be effective from October onward.

The aforementioned changes were announced as a measure to offset impacts on MPL's revenue resulting from the cancellation of the 30 percent surcharge levied for certain services rendered between 2330 and 0730 hrs.

MPL announced its decision to slash surcharge on September 4, in order to prevent shipping agents from imposing additional fees on businessmen.

Recently, several entrepreneurs have expressed concern regarding extra fees levied by shipping agents, with some complaining that the additional charges are higher than the original price of the goods delivered.

The surcharge cancellation, which will be effective from September 13 onward, was finalised by MPL's board in line with recommendations from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
