Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), on Friday, announced the decision to slash the 30 percent surcharge on certain services offered between 2330 and 0730 hrs.

The decision, which will be effective from September 13 onward, was finalised by MPL's board in line with recommendations from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, MPL's Head of Cargo Operations Ahmed Inan stated that the cancellation was intended to prevent shipping agents from imposing additional fees on businessmen.

Recently, several entrepreneurs have expressed concern regarding extra fees levied by shipping agents, with some complaining that the additional charges are higher than the original price of the goods delivered.

The Head of Cargo Operations also revealed that MPL would increase wharfage handling fees by seven percent in order to offset impacts on MPL's revenue resulting from the cancellation of surcharge.

He added these fees would be directly paid by the consignee.
