Maldive Gas is preparing to take legal action against a Dubai-based company, Jaksha Energy, after failing to receive a refund for an advance payment of USD 240,000 (MVR 3.7 million).

The state-owned company, which imports and distributes cooking gas in Maldives, made the payment in October last year, covering 30 percent of a gas shipment.

However, the shipment was not delivered within the agreed timeframe, and despite multiple attempts to recover the advance, the company has yet to receive the payment.

A Maldive Gas official said that despite several discussions with the Dubai-based supplier, no refund has been issued.

"Legal action is underway. The company's legal team is working diligently to recover the advance payment. We want to assure that no fraud was involved in this transaction," Maldive Gas stated in a written response.

Maldive Gas said that gas purchases are conducted in line with the company’s procurement policy. A request for quotation is sent out, and gas is purchased from reliable suppliers at the most competitive price available.

The issue was raised during a Parliament Public Accounts Committee meeting by Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Nazim, who is also a senior member of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

Nazim said that the reasons for the change in supplier were not adequately explained by Maldive Gas. He said that the parent company of Maldive Gas, State Trading Organization (STO), is investigating the matter and has since taken control of the gas procurement process.

However, Mihaaru News reported that the shift to STO's oversight of gas imports occurred before this issue arose. STO has yet to comment on the matter.
