Housing Development Corporation (HDC) confirms new efforts by the company to increase safety for Hulhumale' pedestrians with crossing light installations.

HDC, which maintains Hulhumale' in the Greater Male' Region, said efforts are underway to make the island a safer place for pedestrians and motorists; traffic light installation being part of the plan.

Traffic light installations commenced near Hulhumale' Hospital on Friday, July 22. The lights signal pedestrians to cross roads across designated crossings.

The installation of traffic lights come as preventive measures against possible accidents owing to increasing traffic in the town in recent months.

The island experiences heavy traffic with occasional speeders across the island's wide asphalt-laden roads, which give rise to the potentiality for accidents.

Maldives Police Service reports extra measures to stop speeding vehicles on Hulhumale' roads.

The authority will reportedly dispatch its traffic division officers equipped with speed-guns to intervene speeders and take necessary action over breaches to traffic regulations.

The neighboring capital city of Male' previously had traffic lights installed in major roads ensuring control of vehicle movement.

However, the lights were dislodged years prior due to which traffic congestion and minor accidents have become a frequent occurrence in the island nation's capital.
