Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said yesterday that changes to the guidelines would be revealed soon to address the challenges encountered in determining the number of vehicles allowed on the roads of local islands.

The minister said that a committee has been formed to address the issue of vehicle congestion in Male' City, and measures are being identified to resolve the issue. He added that city and island councils will determine the maximum number of vehicles allowed on islands. He said that the existing regulations will be amended and made public within the next two months.

The regulations stipulate that an assessment is necessary to determine the number of vehicles, taking into account factors such as population size, vehicle increase, available parking space, peak rush hour, and the maximum period of time vehicles can be used.

Transport Ministry has been conducting a research with the help of foreign technical experts from developed countries in order to reduce the congestion in Male’ City.

The ministry has earlier said that last year, over 69,000 vehicles were registered of which over 42,000 vehicles were registered in Male’ City.

Given the rapid surge in vehicles, the Transport Ministry has said that the numbers are reaching a point where the city can no longer accommodate them. As part of a solution to the traffic issue in Male' City, the government has decided to construct parking buildings.
