Working class- the powerhouse of the nation

The Maldives, with its tropical beauty attracting millions of visitors annually, is maintained by the tireless efforts of the workers driving the economy forward. Labour day, first observed in Maldives in 2011, honors the dedication and spirit of the Maldivian workforce.

Labour day, or May Day, traces back to the global labour movement in the late 19th century, emerging as a response to exploitation of the working class and oppressive working conditions prevailing during the Industrial Revolution. The movement gained momentum worldwide, with labourers advocating for fair wages, reasonable working hours and better workplace conditions. Since then, it has evolved into a day of remembrance and reflection, reminding the world of the ongoing struggles to establish and uphold labour rights.

In the Maldives, labour day acknowledges the invaluable role of the working class engaged in various industries, from fishing, tourism and hospitality, health and infrastructure, fueling the nations growth and development.

One of the fundamental aspects of labour day is the protection of employees’ rights and safeguarding their wellbeing. Efforts to protect workers rights have led to the implementation of labour laws and regulations aimed at ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions and social protection initiatives such as the pension scheme and the universal health insurance (Aasandha) in addition to emergency medical welfare, disability allowances and food subsidies among others.

In addition, initiatives such as the establishment of trade unions and workers associations have empowered employees to advocate for their rights. These include Maldives Trade Union Congress (MTUC), an association representing different labour rights associations, Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU), an association representing healthcare workers and Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), an association representing tourism employees.

These associations play an important role in promoting dialogue between employers, government bodies and employees, fostering a more equitable and inclusive working environment.

The development of a skilled workforce is essential for the sustainable development of the Maldives. Investment in education, vocational training and capacity building programs to enhance employability and professional development of the workforce.

In the year 2001, the Maldives Accreditation Board (MAB) established the first version of the Maldives National Qualifications Framework (MNQF) with a view to provide learners, employers and education providers with qualifications that are nationally standardized and quality assured. With access to better quality education, employees in various sectors can further their education and create pathways for career development.

Following this, in 2019, with the government’s Free Education Scheme for students opened the doors to study up to the first degree free of charge under state funding. This initiative removed the financial barrier many faced to acquire higher education, improving employment opportunities and higher earning potential.

By investing in human capital development, the Maldives aims to unlock the full potential of its workforce and drive innovation across key sectors.

Promoting inclusive and equitable employment opportunities, including persons with disabilities is an essential step towards building a cohesive work environment. However, persons with disabilities often face hurdles when seeking employment transcending beyond their skills and qualifications. Social stigma, limited accessibility to workplaces and misconceptions about disabilities contribute to a significant underrepresentation of this demographic in the workforce.

In a move to create a more accessible and supportive work environment, the government announced the formulation of a policy aimed at addressing employment challenges by these groups. This includes creating equal opportunities for persons with disabilities within the job market and initiating a planning construction regulation ensuring that government institutions are transformed into wheelchair accessible spaces.

While there is still much progress to be made in enhancing workers' rights and well-being, Maldives continues to advocate for their continuous advancement, ensuring its commitment to fostering a fair and equitable workforce.

As the Maldives commemorates Labour day, it is imperative that each citizen stands in solidarity with the workers and foster an environment where every individual can thrive and succeed. As their dedicated efforts are acknowledged today, the resolve to build a future where every employee is valued, their voices heard and their rights protected only grows stronger.
