Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Friday, called for greater Islamic solidarity within the Islamic community and to strengthen cooperation in the fields of human rights, commerce and information exchange, while emphasising the need to embrace the teachings and principles of Islam.

Delivering his statement at the 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Minister Shahid briefed Member States on the recent democratic and human rights achievements of the country following the presidential elections that were held on September 2018.

The Minister also spoke of the need to combat radicalization and intolerance, and conveyed that Maldives condemns terrorism in all its manifestations, especially those committed in the name of Islam.

While focusing on international issues that are important to the Islamic community, Minister Shahid reiterated the support by Maldives to the sovereign Palestinian State, while also advocating for unhindered access for humanitarian aid for the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

During his visit to Abu Dhabi, where this year’s OIC Council of Foreign Ministers is being held, Minister Shahid will conduct a number of bilateral meetings with his counterparts in the OIC and will call on the Secretary General of the organization.

Maldives became a member of the OIC in 1976, and has since actively participated in its activities and meetings. Comprising mainly of Muslim-majority countries, the organization presently has 57 Member States.
