The local man who died early Wednesday after falling from the fourth floor of State Trading Organisation (STO) was being treated for mental illness, police said citing the man’s family.

The deceased was Mohamed Hailam, 35, of Eenaz house in Machangolhi ward of capital Male.

The police are currently investigating whether his death was an accident or suicide. The only details disclosed of the incident is that he had been undergoing treatment for a mental illness, according to his family.

There have been no reports yet of Hailam’s activities at STO prior to his fall or if he had been employee at one of its offices.

Witnesses reported that Hailam had fallen to the enclosed court at the centre of STO, previously the location of Cafe Alfresco.

The police spokesperson had said Hailam was alive when police reached the scene around 7.30am and immediately rushed the man to the hospital.

“But he was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital."
