The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Ministry of Gender and Family and the police have launched an investigation into the abuse of an 11-year-old boy in the orphanage in suburb Vilimale’.

According to credible sources cited by local media outlet, Mihaaru, the boy was mistreated by five men employed at the orphanage. According to the source, the maltreatment occurred with the knowledge of the head of the orphanage.

In addition to numerous attempts to ‘psychologically weaken’ the boy, it is also reported that he was stripped naked in public on one occasion.

An official of the Gender Ministry stated that such actions would not be tolerated. The official guaranteed that if any information of neglect or abuse was received, actions are taken against any such employees and they are dismissed if necessary.

As of yet, the employees who maltreated the boy continue to work in the orphanage where the boy and several other children live, according to the source.
