Police announced Monday that the mobile phone of the policeman, who went missing after a dinghy he was in capsized in Addu atoll late Saturday, has been found.

According to Police, the brother of the missing Corporal Mohamed Sumaid, 27, of Addu atoll Hithadhoo island, found the latter’s mobile phone and fishing rod on an uninhabited island near Shangri-la Resort in the same atoll.

Sumaid, along with two other men, had gone fishing in the dinghy Saturday evening when a large wave capsized the small boat around sunset. His friends, Hussain Saeed and Ahmed Naif, had swum safely to the uninhabited island after the dinghy capsized, before wading across the channel to the nearby Shangri-la Resort to seek help.

Hussain Saeed narrated to Mihaaru on Monday that their dinghy had capsized near the uninhabited island. He said that Sumaid, who is a strong swimmer thanks to his police training, had apparently swum with the duo but had later not been found.

Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have been searching for Sumaid since Saturday night. In addition to the armed forces, a diving team and Sumaid’s family and friends are also aiding in the search.
