Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed three people have been arrested so far on election day over having compromised the secrecy of ballots and disrupting peaceful voting at the polling station.
Three people have been arrested thus far on Sunday as citizens around the country headed to polling stations to cast their ballots in the parliamentary elections.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) made the announcement in a post on the social media platform "X" stating that three people had been arrested under the ongoing "Operation Blue Tide by 1500 hrs on Sunday.
One person was arrested for compromising the secrecy of their ballot in Malé City, and two others were arrested in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Fiyoari in relation to disrupting the peace at the polling station.
Compromising the secrecy of ballots is a crime under the Maldives' constitution.
According to updates shared by the Elections Commission of Maldives regarding Majlis Elections 2024, 52 percent of all eligible voters have shown up and cast their ballots as of 1400 hrs.
