The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET) said haze has lowered visibility in the Northern and Central parts of Maldives.

Haze is an atmospheric phenomenon in which dust, smoke, and other dry particulates suspended in air obscure the visibility and clarity of the sky.

According to MET, while 10 km visibility is reported on a clear day, the average visibility over the past 24 hours in central atolls has been drastically reduced to 4 km, due to the prevailing easterly winds.

Visibility may vary depending on wind speed, direction, and rainfall.

MET further said Maldives generally observed low visibility during the transitional period to northeast monsoon (dry season); from December until March. The authority also claims the Maldives observed haze from the wind blowing from the Himalayan range, traveling eastbound, reaching the island nation.

Meanwhile, Health Protection Agency (HPA) previously listed a set of precautions to practice during low visibility periods.

HPA recommends;

- Less outdoor activities for patients with allergies, chronic coronary and pulmonary diseases

- Pregnant women, elderly citizens, and children to spend less time outdoors

- Using face masks outside

- Close all doors or windows in residences

- Reduce outdoor exercises and sports
