President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday stated that the government believes in equal opportunities for women across all sectors.

In a video message by him on the occasion of International Women's Day the president stated that the government believes in enhancing the role of women at top positions and their participation in decision making.

He noted that the administration had ratified amendments to the Decentralization Act that allows an enhanced role for women in governance. The reform allocates one-third of local council seats to women.

He further noted that with the council elections upcoming, the new amendments ensure the active participation of women in the governance of administrative divisions of the local councils.

In addition to this, President Solih stated that assisting women entrepreneurs by facilitating loans to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) run by women, was an important pledge by the administration.

Moreover, he said that it is equally important for the government to work towards securing adequate finances to support efforts to abolish discriminatory social norms and working towards the betterment of women.

"As we celebrate the role of women in our society, we must accept the fact that there is still much to do in the sphere of ensuring gender equality and that the government will continue to enhance its efforts towards increasing the participation of women within the civil service," said President Solih.
