President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Tuesday that government officials, including the President, should not be allowed to influence the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
Speaking at a discussion held with ACC members at the President's Office to address the concerns over the delay in development projects due to ACC's investigations, President Solih reiterated that the government's 'zero tolerance for corruption' is a key policy of the current administration.
In reference to ACC's mandate of investigating all lodged accusations of corruption, President Solih had previously requested authorities to refrain from causing further delay to any development projects.
Speaking at Vaikaradhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, whilst canvassing for the upcoming Local Council Elections, President Soli stated that ACC must investigate any complaints filed regarding the bidding process for a development project, as it is their lawful responsibility.
The corruption watchdog's President Mariyam Shiuna formerly stated that ACC would sit down with the President to discuss the aforementioned concerns.
During the meeting, the members of the ACC shared information on the cases they receive and elaborated on the process the commission takes to investigate a matter.
They further explained the process the commission takes prior to requesting a project be halted and emphasised that ACC is currently in discussion with government agencies to formulate preventive measures against corruption.
