United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Henrietta Fore, on Thursday, released a statement condemning the death of two Palestinian children during demonstrations at the fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel on September 6.

“We remind Israel of its critical responsibility to ensure that the safety and well-being of children is paramount at all times".

Ali Sami Ali al-Ashqar, 17, and Khalid Abu Bakr al-Rabai, 14, were both shot during Great March of Return protests.

A further 66 individuals sustained injuries during the protest.

The UNICEF Executive Director expressed the importance of authorities in Gaza fulfilling their responsibility to prevent children from being exposed to violence and used as political instruments.

Additionally, the statement also stressed that children’s safety and rights should be prioritized by Israel, Palestine and "all adults who have influence over children’s lives".

Reflecting on the dire situation in Gaza and the likelihood of continued protests, Fore asserted that "the time for action to protect children is now, before any more lives are lost”.
