Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, on Friday, prohibited the import of certain building materials without proper permission.

According to the ministry, six different construction materials will require permission prior to import, creation and construction. If the materials are created or imported without permission, testing will also be prohibited, the ministry said.

Materials prohibited for import and creation without permission

- Cement

- All grades of stone for concrete

- All types of sand for concrete

- Structural metal

- All grades of ready-mix concrete

- All stone and brick used for construction

The ministry stated that Maldives Customs Service would seize all items imported without permission.

Permission will be granted to all registered under the national building act.

The Planning Ministry declared that the reasoning behind banning the six types of materials is to ensure that all building material is up to acceptable standards.
