Addu City Council, on Tuesday, announced its decision to reclaim 25 hectares of land for the development of a four-star resort.
Indian consultancy firm, L&T Infrastructure Engineering Ltd met with the council to discuss the matter.
The project is financed through the USD 800 million Line of Credit (LOC) extended by the Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM) for development projects within the country. This includes additional initiatives such as road construction, development of housing units, expansion of Hithadhoo Regional Port as well as land reclamation for commercial and industrial zones.
A total of 153 hectares of land will be reclaimed from the second most populous city in the country, out of which 90 hectares will be reclaimed in Hithadhoo, while 38 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo.
As part of the ongoing efforts to bolster the tourism industry within the atoll, the Ministry of Tourism on Sunday, signed an agreement with the council to develop 4,000 tourist beds.
At present, two resorts operate in Addu - Shangri-La Villinigli Resort and Spa and Canareef Resort Maldives.
