Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has stated that if Chinese and Indian markets are maintained, 2.3 million tourist arrivals can be reached this year.
Speaking at the inauguration of Youth Ministry's Hackathon event, Minister Faisal said that the country's economy would reap benefits through investing in technologically inclined youth. He expressed a hope to see the establishment of locally led websites similar to Booking.com and Agoda.
"I urge you to create an application for Maldives' tourism where prospective visitors can conveniently make bookings at any resort they opt for while they are in France, Italy, Russia or elsewhere in the world," the Minister said.
The Minister assured youth that the government would remain dedicated to ensure delivery of services to meet the needs of youth.
The Minister said that while the target for tourist arrivals in 2024 is 2 million, current trends indicate that it may exceed this figure. Tourist arrivals till date this year is at 170,000 - a 12 percent rise from the number in the same period last year.
