Tourism bed nights saw a 6 percent increment, while tourist arrivals saw an 8 percent decline in August 2022.

The statistics were updated by Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) in their most recent Economic Update.

According to the authority, the bed nights increment and the tourist arrival decline are compared with the corresponding month in 2021.

On the other hand, when compared with August 2019, bed nights rose by 18 percent while tourist arrivals declined by 5 percent.

The authority reports a total of 131,862 tourist arrivals recorded for August 2022.

Total tourist arrivals mainly "reflected the robustness in arrivals from main source markets" that included Europe and India. Highest number of tourist arrivals were recorded from Russia, India, United Kingdom, Italy and Germany.

Though India is the top source market in annual terms, Russia is the strongest source market in terms of tourist arrivals for August exclusively. The market recorded a monthly increment of 11 percent in arrivals. Moreover, arrivals from Russia exceeded pre-war levels, increasing by 9 percent.

The operational bed capacity of the tourism industry saw an increment of 7,831 beds when compared with August 2021. However, occupancy rate dropped to 59 percent in August 2022 from 65 percent in the same month last year.

For the period of January to August 2022, total tourist arrivals increased by 43 percent in annual terms while bed nights rose by 36 percent. However, compared to pre-pandemic levels of 2019 for the same period, tourist arrivals registered a 5 percent decline whereas bed nights registered a growth of 15 percent.

During the period, the average stay declined to 8.2 days from 9.1 days in the corresponding period of 2021.
