The Public Accounts Committee of the parliament today requested the details of compensations issued during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

The matter was escalated to the committee by MP of Funadhoo constituency Mohamed Mamdhooh, who said that over MVR two billion was given out in the past five years as compensation.

"With such a big amount given out as compensation, I think we need to look into how these [funds] were given out," he said.

The suggestion was supported by central Hithadhoo constituency's MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq.

By the end of last year, the government spent MVR 556 million on compensations. This was five times more than the budgeted amount. This year, MVR 101 million is allocated for compensations in the state budget. However, half way into the year, this amount has already been surpassed.

Over the past 13 years, the state spend MVR 2.7 billion on compensating various parties. Out of this 74 percent was issued during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, amounting to MVR two billion.
