A recent survey has shown that the Maldives is the sixth most visited country per capita in the world.

The new survey by TravelMag.com looked at annual visitor numbers in countries around the globe, comparing them against the size of their respective populations.

The survey declared Maldives to be the sixth most visited country in the world with 3,200 annual visitors per capita, while the Nordic island nation of Iceland topped the list with 6,600 visitors.

Numbers for visitor arrivals cited for the survey were taken from a report released by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in August 2018. For countries where no official UNWTO data was available, alternative sources were used, according to Travelmag.

For the purposes of the survey, only sovereign nations with a population of at least 100,000 were taken into account.

The 10 most visited countries in the world based on the total number of tourists per 1,000 citizens:

1. Iceland - 6,600

2. Malta - 5,300

3. Bahamas - 3,800

4. Croatia - 3,700

5. Austria - 3,400

6. Maldives - 3,200

7. Cyprus - 3,000

8. Montenegro - 3,900

9. Bahrain - 2,900

10. Estonia - 2,500

At the opposite end of the scale, Yemen, Libya and Somalia were the least visited counties, with less than one visitor per 1,000 citizens. Travelmag stated that while there were no UNWTO data available for these destinations, tourist arrivals are close to zero according to independent sources.
