Seventy percent of workers in the tourism industry fully vaccinated in Maldives

Seventy percent of workers in the tourism industry of Maldives have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in Maldives.

According to statistics released by the Tourism Ministry, 185,000 workers in the industry has received both doses of the vaccine, as of last week.

So far 316,069 people in Maldives has received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. Which over 63 percent of the population.

According to tourism ministry, 96 percent of the workers in tourism industry is included in that statistic. This includes staff from resorts, guesthouses in local islands, and staff from liveaboards as well.

Maldives has welcomed over half a million tourists by June 25 as well. While the Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom noted this was a victory given the recent health crisis Maldives faced after a surge in COVID-19 cases, he stated he expected to pass that landmark earlier.

Maldives faced an increase in COVID cases in late April. May of this year had the most number of daily positives, often above 1,000 on some days. Greater Male' Area was put in a lockdown in May 26, with loosening restrictions at several points since then. Daily positives have reached below 500 in the past week.

There has been 73,094 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Maldives. Currently there are 4,067 active cases.
