Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed on Sunday noted that Maldivians, in light of the recent bombings in Sri Lanka, were propagating terrorism encouraging rhetorics, warning legal action against those who do so.

During the press conference held at Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters, Hameed revealed that online and social media platforms are being closely monitored.

He urged people to refrain from making statements that create hatred and divisions between one another, adding that such actions are an improper use of their freedom of expression.

Hameed stated that the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka will ensure protection and assistance to Maldivians currently in the country.

The commissioner further reiterated that they have yet to receive reports of any Maldivians involved in the attacks, adding that Maldives is in talks with relevant foreign bodies.

In the wake of eight blasts in and around Colombo, which killed over 290 people and injured more than 500, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal announced that security forces are currently in talks with relevant authorities to identify any possibilities of a similar threat to Maldives.

He revealed that MNDF and Police met officials of Maldives Customs Service, Maldives Immigration and the tourism sector, and put together a framework on reporting suspicious behaviour of visitors, to the authorities.
