The parliament's Government Oversight Committee, on Wednesday, decided to advise President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to order the new Minister of Tourism, Dr Abdulla Mausoom, to retake his oath.

According to the parliamentary committee, Dr Mausoom, at the time of undertaking his oath, did not withdraw as the Managing Director of a business venture, thus invalidating his initial oath upon appointment as the tourism minister.

Although he later resigned from his post, the committee report concluded that Dr Mausoom's business connections meant he was ineligible for the post.

During the committee discussion phase, parliamentarians noted the issue as minor but recommended Dr Mausoom retake his oath to avoid any disputes regarding his appointment.

Parliamentary representative for Madduvari constituency and opposition party People's National Congress (PNC) Vice President Adam Shareef stated that the incident occurred as a result of the President's Office's failure to observe due process, noting Dr Mausoom's appointment as the second such occurrence.

While the matter was contested among committee members, the final decision was in favour of a second oath taking ceremony.
