Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), on Wednesday, organised a march in the capital city of Male to secure workers' rights on the occasion of Labour Day.
The workers marched across Male' from Maldives Centre for Social Education in Maafannu ward to Carnival area in Henveiru ward.
During the walk, participants voiced several sentiments including demands to expedite the implementation of a minimum wage, preserve workers' rights, end discrimination against employees and pay workers rightful wages.
Jumhooree Party (JP) member and Kendhoo Parliamentarian Ali Hussain noted that a minimum wage was not implemented despite it being mandated under the Employment Act.
"It is sad and tragic that workers are denied their rights", said MP Ali Hussain, after noting that 11 years passed since the amendment stipulating a minimum wage was passed.
He also urged participants to be active and at the forefront of workers' rights talks.
