The president said appointing a foreign CEO to MIFCO is also part of these efforts.
The government will weed out all the corruption that has been taking place within MIFCO, the state owned fisheries company, said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today.
Speaking with press during his visit to Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, the president said that his government is working to reform and strengthen MIFCO and reduce wasteful expenditure.
"There have been various wrongdoings happening there for ages. I believe it looks like corruption. We will weed out everything," he told reporters.
The government is working towards that goal and that is why he appointed a foreign CEO to the company as well, the president further detailed.
Early last December, President Muizzu appointed a Swizz CEO, Dr Vitaliy Lyubimov, who specialises in strategic crisis management and has 20 years of experience in the area to the company.
According to the president, appointing a foreigner for the job for the first time in the company's history is a move towards eliminating corruption.
"We started working with that determination. There is now a foreign national [as the CEO of MIFCO]. As we said, we brought in a good person from a place who is not usually involved in these things of ours," he said.
President Muizzu further said the government is also working to strengthen MIFCO in the way local fishermen want. As such, projects are on going such as increasing cold storage spaces, he pointed out.
The President said this government will do the best for its fishermen.
During his ongoing trip, President Muizzu also announced that the government would be signing an agreement next month, to develop a fish processing factory in Gdh. Fiyoaree.
Despite a rocky situation with fishermen over unpaid fees for fish, President Muizzu previously said that since 10th of December, fishermen are now paid within 48 hours of selling their catch.
