Office of the President Elect has announced today that they have so far not taken a decision on how to proceed with the applications for land plots and flats in the second rounds of Gedhoruveriya (flat) and Binveriya (land) housing schemes.
The second round of these schemes were announced a week ahead of the second round of September's presidential election. Transitional Spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul said they are currently in discussions on the matter and will soon come to a consensus on how to proceed with the applications received.
Over 40,000 forms have been received while the deadline for submissions was yesterday. The incumbent government has not yet announced whether it will be processing the applications before the end of their term on November 17.
Firuzul maintained that President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's stand is that he will not deprive any persons who have received confirmation documents or been gazetted as recipients of flats or land plots.
He stated that when Muizzu announced this stance, the publicized list was for the first round of the housing schemes, adding that the applications that have come in since are for an entirely new scheme which was announced much later on.
"the President Elect's commitment is to the previously published list. We are still conferring on what to do about the applications that came following the latter announcement for interest," Firuzul said.
While the current government has announced that the land plots in this second round will be allocated from Uthuru Thilafalhu, this goes against the incoming government's policies.
Muizzu's manifesto details that 65,000 plots of land or flats will be given. These include 11,900 land plots and 26,000 flats in Fushidhiggarufalhu, 89 hectares of land to be reclaimed in Giraavaru falhu to allocate more than 1000 land plots and 2,800 flats, and reclaiming 300 hectares of land in Gulhi Falhu to allocate more than 3,500 land plots and 7,800 flats.
